#11 UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Edged in 2nd-Straight One-Goal Game, Falls to Drexel 14-13
ALBANY, N.Y. – A 5-0 UAlbany run into the fourth quarter to take a two-point lead was not enough as the Great Danes fell, in another one-goal game, to Drexel 14-13 at John Fallon Field on Saturday.
“I thought we played good defense, but we did not shoot well or have energy on the offensive end,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr. “We had our chances, and it was a clean game. But we still feel good; we have had two one-goal losses, we just need to play a little better.”
UAlbany (0-2) had a two-goal lead on Drexel (1-1) with 12:56 left after Tim Cox’s second goal. Drexel scored five of the next six goals, including the last two by Ben McIntosh, to go up 14-12 with 2:48 remaining. A John Maloney score from Lyle Thompson with 1:45 left brought UAlbany within one, but a couple of late shots by the Great Danes were wide, and the Dragons got the 14-13 victory.
Miles Thompson finished the contest with four goals and two assists, increasing his point-scoring streak to 39-consecutive games. Lyle Thompson also had six points off a goal and five assists for UAlbany. Goalkeeper Blaze Riorden had 17 saves on 31 shots on goal despite picking up the loss.
For Drexel, McIntosh concluded with four goals, while teammate Nick Trizano had a trio. Cole Shafer notched five assists, adding a goal. Getting the win, Wil Gabrielsen had 16 saves in the cage.
Drexel connected with the first two goals, holding UAlbany off the scoreboard for nearly 13 minutes. UAlbany countered with two quick goals from Ty Thompson and Riley Lasda, using a Maloney charge and score from Miles Thompson to take a 3-2 lead with 12:56 left in the second. The two sides went back and forth for the rest of the quarter, with a Tim Cox score from Lyle Thompson tying the score at 5-5 with 25 seconds remaining in the half, sending the teams into the locker room tied.
McIntosh scored a pair of early goals to start a 3-0 Drexel run into the third quarter, putting the visitors up 8-5. Miles Thompson scored a pair of quick goals in a span of 21 seconds, followed by Lyle Thompson finding Ryan Feuerstein and Will Stenberg for scores to put UAlbany ahead 9-8 going into the fourth.
Cox’s goal 2:04 into the fourth gave UAlbany a 10-8 lead, its largest advantage of the game. Drexel got a man-up opportunity, with Shafer passing to Jared Boudreau for the score. UAlbany responded with Lyle Thompson throwing a hard bounce shot to the top of the cage for the score, making it 11-9 with 11:06 left. Drexel’s 5-1 run, capped by two McIntosh’s goals, sealed the game for the Dragons.
UAlbany will play next Saturday against Harvard on March 1st at 12 p.m. at John Fallon Field.
