ALBANY, N.Y. – Despite a seven-point performance by Miles Thompson, the UAlbany men’s lacrosse team fell at home to Canisius 14-10 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Thompson trio earned at least a point on all but one UAlbany (3-4) goal against Canisius, with Miles Thompson scoring four goals and three assists.  Lyle Thompson had a goal, three assists and two caused turnovers, while Ty Thompson had two goals and an assist.  The loss went to Blaze Riorden, who had 12 saves in a little over 58 minutes in the cage.

For Canisius (4-4), Vince Gravino scored four goals, while Tim Edwards had six assists and a goal, going 9-13 on face-offs.  Alex Govenettio earned the victory, saving 12 shots in 60 minutes.

The Great Danes will begin conference play on Saturday, taking on Vermont at John Fallon Field at 7 p.m.

After a couple of early faceoff wins, Kevin Collins and Edwards connected for early goals for a 2-0 lead in the opening 1:35.  At the 9:11 mark, Ty Thompson received a pass near the goal from Miles Thompson, fired high for the score.  The teams exchanged goals the rest of the quarter, with a Miles Thompson score with 41 seconds left in the period putting UAlbany within one at 4-3.

A little more than four minutes into the second period, Lyle Thompson scored unassisted to tie the game at four.  Graviano scored the other way just eight seconds later, adding another goal at the 5:34 mark.  Miles Thompson scored on a give and go from Lyle Thompson before the end of the quarter to pull UAlbany within one at the half as Canisius led 6-5.

As the half was 50 seconds old, Lyle Thompson found Miles Thompson again for a score to tie the game at six.  Edwards found teammates for scores for three-in-a-row for Canisius, building a 9-6 lead for the visitors with 7:14 left in the third.  Ty Thompson stopped the run 15 seconds later, scoring off a Miles Thompson pass.  After Gravino scored another goal, Matthew Bertrams scored with less than a minute left in the period.  Gravino added another with six seconds left to put the score at 11-8 going into the third.

UAlbany won the first faceoff in the fourth quarter, quickly finding a running Ryan Feuerstein for a goal 31 seconds in.  Following a Jeff Edwards goal at the 12:52 mark, Canisius held the ball for long periods of time to prevent the UAlbany offense from getting going.  On 30-second warning, Sam Connors scored a goal with 2:07 left to put the visitors up four.  Miles Thompson scored just six seconds later to try to spur a comeback, but UAlbany did not score again in the game.  Mike Vavonese added a goal with 53 seconds remaining to set the eventual final score as Canisius took the win 14-10.
