America East Release
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University at Albany junior John DeLallo has been named the America East Men’s Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete for the 2013-14 season, the conference offices announced Wednesday. DeLallo was named alongside fellow UAlbany student-athlete Peter Hooley, as well as Vermont’s Luke Apfeld, Maine’s Liz Wood, Stony Brook’s Olivia Burne, and New Hampshire’s Lauren McCandless.
A native of Marietta, N.Y., DeLallo has accumulated a GPA of 3.80 studying physics. Wednesday’s award is just the latest in a long list of academic accolades DeLallo has received in his career. This is his second America East Scholar-Athlete award, having been named Spring Scholar-Athlete in 2013. Additionally, DeLallo has been named to the America East All-Academic teams for both 2013 indoor track and 2013 outdoor track.
In competition, DeLallo, is one of the standout middle-distance athletes on the UAlbany men’s team. During the indoor season, DeLallo was the team leader in the 800, and placed second in the mile and third in the 1,000 at America East Championships. He also ran a leg on the runner-up distance medley relay. DeLallo is ninth all-time in the 800, fifth all-time in the mile, and third all-time in the 1,000 in UAlbany indoor history. Outdoors, DeLallo is sixth all-time in the 1,500.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the five championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming & diving. Member institutions of the America East Conference for the 2013-14 winter season included Albany, Binghamton University, University of Hartford, Maine, UMBC, UMass Lowell, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook and University of Vermont.
Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport. Then, a committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose an honoree in each of the five winter championship sports. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50. They will automatically be eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to be announced this summer.
