Women’s Golf Places Third At MAAC Championship

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – In a seven-team field, the University at Albany women’s golf team placed third in the 2014 MAAC Golf Championship held at Disney’s Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. With a three-round total of 1,007 (+143), the Great Danes finished just two strokes behind second-place Quinnipiac (+141), while Siena College earned its 13th MAAC title with a mark of 978 (+114).

The third-place finish marks UAlbany’s highest in the MAAC Championship since becoming as associate member in 2010. The Great Danes had previously finished as high as fourth-place twice (2010-11).

Individually, UAlbany graduate student Sam Schuffenecker led the Danes with a score of 249, shooting an 80 in the final round. She tied for seventh overall in the field of 35, while junior Victoria Choi tied for 10th, just one stroke behind her teammate.

Freshmen Rosalee Hearns (253) and Paige Fuijhara (258) tied for 16th and 18th places, respectively, while senior Lisa Agoglia (261) tied for 25th.

Siena’s Kylie Strijek took home the 2014 McLeod Trophy, finishing atop the leaderboard with a 239 (+23), while Siena coach Dave Wronowski was voted the 2014 MAAC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

Nicole Scola from Quinnipiac University was named the 2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year with an individual championship score of +30 (246).
