Softball Set For Regionals In Eugene
INDIANAPOLIS – Hours after their defeat of Stony Brook to win the America East Tournament, the University at Albany softball team arrived at the UAlbany Hall of Fame room with 20 minutes to spare before the NCAA selection show began that would reveal where the team was headed for their next game. The Danes (33-11) did not have to wait long, as their regional pool was revealed early. UAlbany will travel to Eugene, Oregon, to play in the pool of number one overall seed Oregon (49-7-1). Wisconsin (34-18) and Utah Valley (18-40) filled the final two slots in the pool.
The regional round, which takes place from May 16-18, features a double-elimination tournament which will produce 16 teams for the Super Regionals. UAlbany will play its first opponent, Wisconsin, on May 16 at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. The Danes will not play their second game until May 17, regardless of the outcome of their game against Wisconsin.
Thirty-two conferences were awarded an automatic qualification, while the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and will play at campus sites this weekend. UAlbany’s last trip to the NCAA tournament came in 2011, when the Danes traveled to Penn State University. Oregon was in UAlbany’s region that year as well, defeating the Danes in the opening round 3-1. UAlbany was eliminated by Penn State in their next game 6-1.
