Matt Scott Participates In Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship
ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany assistant football coach Matt Scott was selected by the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as a 2013 Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship participant. In addition to Antwon Bailey, Michael Grant, Jamar Nesbit and Kevin Mawae, Scott was one of five instructors picked to assist the Bills’ coaching staff during training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y.
“It was an amazing experience,” said Scott. “I got a chance to spend three days with them for mandatory minicamp and then another eight days at St. John Fisher for training camp.”
Scott supported the Bills’ linebacking corps during his stay. At UAlbany, he is entering his fourth season as the squad’s cornerbacks coach in addition to working with special teams.
“The biggest thing Coach (Doug) Marrone talked about was attention to detail, and he preached it over and over again,” reflected Scott on his experience. “That’s the one thing I took away from it the most; make sure I leave no stone unturned as a coach, and always do the best I can to get my guys ready to play.”
The Great Danes currently have a number of ties to the Buffalo Bills organization, including former UAlbany assistants Samson Brown and Jim O’Neil serving as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach and linebackers coach, respectively. In addition, UAlbany standout Drew Smith signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Bills this past spring and is currently vying for a spot on the squad’s 53-man roster as a fullback.
Scott, Bailey, Grant, Nesbit and Mawae join Bills’ running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley as fellow recipients of the honor. Wheatley earned the distinction twice, with Tampa Bay in July 2006 and Pittsburgh in June 2008.
The Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship is designed to expose talented minority college coaches to the methods and philosophies of Summer NFL training camps. Walsh introduced the idea to the league in 1987 when he brought in a group of such coaches into his San Francisco 49ers training camp. Eventually every NFL team became a participant in the program.
The Buffalo Bills have participated in the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship program since 1989.
