Field Hockey Overcomes Early Goal to Down Yale 4-2
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany field hockey team navigated unfamiliar territory on Saturday afternoon when the squad came back from a 1-0 deficit to win 4-2 against Yale.
“Sometimes getting off to such a great start, going 3-0 can hurt you,” said head coach Phil Sykes. “Yale played well and put us on our heels early. They’re a well-coached team and we had to dig deep to find something in the second half.”
In the second minute, Yale’s Brooke Gogel charged down the field and fired a shot from the top of the circle to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. It was the first time this season the Great Danes have had to play from behind in their 4-0 start.
Freshman Paula Heuser responded in the ninth minute off a rebounded penalty corner. Yale entered halftime with a 2-1 lead after converting on a penalty corner as the first half expired.
UAlbany turned up the pressure in the second half. Sophomore Liza Morgan tallied her sixth goal of the season on a scramble in the circle after a penalty corner.
Midfielder Fiori Van Rijswijk inserted two more penalty corners for goals in the second half. Daphne Voormolen scored her third goal of the season off a corner from Van Rijswijk in the 50th minute to give UAlbany the lead.
Paula Heuser tallied her second goal of the day on a penalty corner in the 60th minute. The insurance goal was Heuser’s third of the season.
UAlbany returns to action on Sunday against Rutgers at 2 p.m.
