My first impression of the Droid X when I opened the box was “wow this is a larger phone”. It is noticeable larger than the Droid Incredible which has a 3.7” screen and the iPhone with its 3.5”. If it wasn’t for the camera module that bulge’s in the back, the Motorola Droid X would have a very thin build. Motorola did a good job with the design of the device, it has soft corners and a rubberized coated backing. They used a row of physical buttons along the bottom which eliminates those accidental taps you get from the capacitive buttons. The body is made of a plastic. The volume up/down and camera buttons are all in their usual place on the right side. There is an 8 megapixel camera which supports HD 720p video recording and an HDMI out (cable not included).
One thing I was curious about was the battery life, with such a large screen I was not sure how long the device run. The first full day with the phone I got 14.0 hours on the battery before the warning indicator came on. That’s not bad considering the size of the screen and the amount of time I spent playing with the phone.
Phone call quality was solid calling over Verizon’s network. No antenna issues, sorry iphone. The speaker quality is good. It is located at the back of the phone. I compared it to the Droid Incredible and the iPhone 4’s and I would say they were all very similar. One comment about the display, the Droid X uses a LCD display, which looks good, but when compared to other devices like, Droid Incredible’s WVGA AMOLED or the iPhone 4’s IPS LCD it doesn’t have as crisp (resolution, contrast or brightness). I don’t think it will be a big deal for most, the screen is clear and don’t forget large.
On to the camera, even with good lighting, I found the Droid X delivers semi-decent pictures. With an 8megapixal camera on board I was expecting much better quality. In dim lighting I was even less impressed, the iPhone 4g and the Droid Incredible were far superior to the Droid X in picture quality. The video capture has the same issues as the camera. The video quality was not what I expected. I would recommend shooting at 640×480 30fps, instead of 720p because I found it to be a bit grainy.
While most of the software is pure Android, Motorola did outfit the Droid X with one of the best virtual keyboards that I have experienced. That is probably due to the size of the screen, I had very few typos, a true pleasure. The user interface speed is fast, but not as fast as the Droid Incredible. I found the scrolling to be a little choppy, this shouldn’t bother most people, but I did notice it
The Motorola Droid X is loaded with some really great features, its huge screen, and the Swype virtual keyboard makes it a pleasure to use. The addition of mobile HotSpots, (which will come to other Android devices with the 2.2 update) is awesome. The somewhat slower UI performance of the phone won’t be apparent to most unless you do a head to head comparison with other phones. The camera quality can be an issue though, if you are expecting crystal clear images you will be less than satisfied, (the iPhone 4g takes some of the best images I have seen from a phone).
So for those of you who want biggest screen, an awesome virtual keyboard and YouTube videos that play great of the box, then the Motorola Droid X is the phone you have been waiting for.
