Women’s Cross Country Breaks Into Regional Rankings

Division I Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – Thanks to a stellar team performance over the weekend where they finished first overall in Iona’s Meet of Champions, the University at Albany women’s cross country team has earned a spot in the Division I Northeast Regional Rankings, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday.  The rankings list the top-15 teams in each of the nine NCAA Division I regions, with UAlbany coming in 15th in the Northeast Region poll.  The Danes replaced Boston University for the 15th spot in the rankings.

UAlbany was unranked in both the preseason and week one editions of the polls, but have performed well head-to-head against ranked teams so far this season.  In the first meet of the year, UAlbany edged then 11th ranked Vermont to take the team title at the America East Pre-Conference meet in Vestal, N.Y.  After a week without a race, the women traveled south to the Bronx, N.Y. to compete in the Br. Doyle Meet of Champions.  The women again earned the overall team title, defeating meet host and then sixth-ranked Iona, ninth-ranked Yale, and 11th ranked Brown.  As of the latest poll, Iona has slipped to eighth, while Yale, Brown, and Vermont haven’t moved in the rankings.

The UAlbany women will look to continue their winning streak and move up in the poll in their next race on October 5 at Lehigh’s Paul Short Invitational.
