No. 12 Field Hockey Posts Sixth Shutout in 8-0 Win Over Vermont
ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany field hockey (11-2, 2-0 AE) extended its conference record to 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Vermont (0-12, 0-2 AE) 8-0 at Alumni Field.
“We always know Vermont is going to be a tough game,” said head coach Phil Sykes. “I was happy with our team’s defensive effort, and we showed the discipline to do the little things in the attacking end.”
Freshman Paula Heuser led all Great Danes scorers with three goals in addition to an assist. The midfielder has scored 12 goals to go with six assists for a total of 30 points this season. With her three goals against the Catamounts, Heuser ranks 10th in Division I program history in single-season goals and single-season points with 30. She is one of just two freshmen to rank top-10 in either category. The only other former UAlbany player to rank among the program’s top-10 Division I leaders in points and goals in her freshman season is current assistant coach Michelle Simpson. Heuser needs three more goals to pass Simpson, and become the Division I program’s all-time top rookie single-season scorer.
Also getting in on the scoring action was Echo Bretz, Kelly Bonner, Corrine McConville, Liza Morgan and Laura Page. Page tallied her first goal of the season, and leads the squad with seven assists. McConville converted on her sixth penalty stroke of 2013.
Maxi Primus picked up her tenth win in the cage, and was replaced by fellow freshman Averill Erdody with 13 minutes left in regulation.
To date, the Great Danes are scoring 4.46 goals per game, and allowing 0.85 per game.
UAlbany hits the road tomorrow for a nonconference contest at Columbia, slated to begin at 2 p.m.
