GAME STATS BOOK

ALBANY, N.Y. – Despite an early 7-0 lead In front of a sold-out homecoming crowd of 8,500 Saturday evening at Bob Ford Field, the University at Albany football team suffered a 44-17 defeat to the No. 7 Towson University Tigers. With the loss, the Great Danes fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in the CAA, while Towson improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

After UAlbany’s initial score – Jake Meek’s 10-yard touchdown rush with 3:01 remaining in the first – Towson responded with 24 straight points, taking the lead for good.

In the game, junior quarterback Will Fiacchi threw for 126 yards and a touchdown, completing 17-of-35 passes, while junior receiver Cole King and tight end Brian Parker each tallied a team-high four receptions, totaling 27 and 19 yards, respectively. Senior Jameel Gay led the squad with 31 receiving yards and a touchdown grab with two catches in the contest.

Totaling 79 all-purpose yards, junior running back Omar Osbourne totaled 50 rushing yards on 16 carries, as well as 29 receiving yards, making three receptions. Meek finished the night with 44 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Defensively, the Great Danes baited the Tigers into four turnovers, as Jojo McClary and Cory Connell each nabbed an interception, and Christian Dorsey and Randall Exantus both forced a fumble. Dorsey also led the team with 11 tackles, followed by Exantus’ eight.

While UAlbany was forced to punt in their first possession, the Great Dane defense quickly got the crowd involved, as Exantus stripped the ball from receiver Spencer Wilkins at midfield and freshman Michael Nicastro ran the ball back into the end zone. However, a holding penalty on the return put UAlbany on the Towson 32.

Unfortunately, the Great Danes could not convert, going three-and-out, punting the ball to the Towson 11. The CAA’s leading running back, Terrence West, gave Towson an 11-yard gain on second down, and Darius Victor’s 11-yard run converted on third down.  However, the Great Dane defense stepped up again, as Andrew Smith tackled Victor behind the line on scrimmage, and a false start penalty and incomplete pass, made it 3rd-and-17. As quarterback Peter Athens rolled out and threw, UAlbany’s Cory Connell batted the ball in the air and intercepted the pass — his first of the season – giving UAlbany possession on Towson’s 24.

The turnover led to a 7-0 lead for the Great Danes, as Omar Osbourne rushed up the middle for 10 yards and a first down, and wildcat quarterback Jake Meek rushed twice, rolling out to the left for a 10-yard touchdown scamper. Tom O’Riordan’s extra point capped a three-play, 24-yard drive with 3:00 minutes left in the first quarter.

Starting at their own 27, the Tigers worked their way down the field, eventually settling for a 50-yard field goal, kicked by Drew Evangelista with no time remaining in the opening quarter, cutting into UAlbany’s lead to 7-3.

From there, Towson took the lead for good and never let up, scoring back-to-back touchdowns and totaled 21 points in the second quarter alone. Following a five-yard run by West, Athens completed his pass to Wilkins for a 38-yard touchdown. Evangelista’s extra point put Towson up 10-7, ending a 60-yard drive with 10:20 left in the second quarter.

Towson’s defense then intercepted Fiacchi’s pass intended for wide receiver Kevin Chillis, and Donnell Lewis returned the ball 38 yards for a touchdown, giving Towson a 17-7 advantage with 8:48 remaining in the half.

While Smith and Tim Kologrivov tackled West at the line of scrimmage on Towson’s next drive, West finally broke free and scampered 59 yards for his first of two touchdowns on the night. Evangelista’s extra point made it 24-7 Towson with 6:48 left in the stanza.

Towson looked to add another touchdown, handing off to Victor with 1st-and-goal on the five, but Dorsey stripped the ball and a pile up of UAlbany players landed on it in the end zone for a touchback.

From there, the Great Danes marched down the field in the remaining 1:43 in the half, led by Meek’s 30-yard run on 4th-and-3, and Fiacchi’s 22-yard pass to Osbourne. With 10 seconds remaining in the half, O’Riordan’s 35-yard field goal capped the 11-play, 83-yard drive, cutting the margin to 14, 24-10, at the half.

Out of the break, Towson received and quickly added another touchdown for a 31-10 lead. Facing 1st-and-20 on the 42, Athens found Wilkins down the middle for 51 yards, and West capped the 10-play, 84-yard drive, rushing seven yards up the middle and into the end zone for a touchdown.

While the Great Danes were forced to punt on their next possession, redshirt-freshman Jon Martin booted the ball 76 yards — the longest of the year in the CAA — for a touchback.

The Tigers then completed four straight passes to make it 1st-and-goal on the nine, but UAlbany’s defense played spoilers again, as Jojo McClary picked off Athens’ pass in the back of the end zone. While the Great Danes kept Towson off the board, they were unable to turn the turnover into points of their own, punting after three plays.

With 4:33 remaining in the third quarter, Victor stretched Towson’s lead to 38-10 with a 7-yard touchdown run, capping the Tigers’ six-play 68-yard drive.

Chillis looked to spark a comeback, returning the ball 39 yards to start UAlbany at midfield on the next drive; the senior finished with 123 all-purpose yards on the night, including 101 on five kickoff returns. Fiacchi completed his first pass to King for 12 yards to get into Towson territory, and found Chillis for eight yards. Andre Martin then converted on fourth down with a three-yard rush. Facing 4th-and-12 at the Towson 28 in the next set of downs, Fiacchi dropped back and found Gay wide open for a 28-yard touchdown. O’Riordan’s extra point finished a nine-play, 50-yard drive with 1:52 left in the third, making the score 38-17.

In the fourth quarter, the Great Danes held the Tigers off the board until the final minute of play. Towson worked its way 54 yards down the gridiron on eight plays, and Trea Jones completed the drive with a 2-yard run for a touchdown with 54 seconds on the clock. With rain falling from the sky as the game neared an end, the extra point was kicked wide left, making the final score 44-17.

For Towson, West finished with 183 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, carrying the ball 22 times. Athens completed 22-of-32 passes for 294 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Wilkins totaled 129 yards and a score on six catches.

With a bye next Saturday, the Great Danes will have two weeks to prepare for CAA-foe Richmond. UAlbany will make its third trip this season to the state of Virginia on Nov. 2nd.
