Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany held against an aggressive Maine attack but could not make up an early first half deficit, falling 2-1 to the Black Bears on Thursday.

Maine (8-4-1, 5-1-1 AE) scored on its first opportunity just inside the third minute after Maggie Malone took a deflection off a UAlbany (1-14-1, 0-6-1) defender, went around the player and scored near the edge of the goal box for a 1-0 Black Bears lead.

After goalie Jackie Ubert saved a header attempt, UAlbany earned a corner in the seventh minute,  but did not get off a shot.  The following minute, Kari Quinn broke around the left side of the back line after receiving a pass from Alexa Schneider.  Quinn took the shot and scored from the left side to tie the score at 1-1.

Maine went quickly on the restart, as Eve L’Abve crossed the ball to Charlene Achille, who found the cage on the kick just 21 seconds after the previous kick to push Maine back ahead 2-1.

The visitors kept getting shots, including three in a span of seven minutes.  Ubert saved two of them as the other went high.  UAlbany saw counter opportunities in the 24th minute as a Schneider shot missed just left off a deflection.  The subsequent corner did not see a shot.

In response, Maine got off three more shots in the following one-and-a-half minutes.  After the second hit the post, Achille shot the ball on the rebound, which Ubert saved in the middle.

Anna Hogan earned an opportunity after UAlbany got the ball in the box in the 29th minute.  After a couple of passes, Hogan kicked the ball towards the left side, where a standing defender blocked it near the post.

Later in minute 38, Krista Fitzpatrick’s corner kick was knocked away by the Maine defense.  The ball was placed back in for a Caitlyn Paltsios header shot towards the left post, which was saved again by a defender.  The half expired with Maine leading 2-1.

The visitors got off the first four shots and three corner kicks in the second half.  Ubert and the UAlbany defense held over that 15 minute span.

UAlbany got two chances to attack in the 64th and 65th minutes, but Erin Savoldy’s shot went high above the crossbar, and on the second chance, Aubrey VanGorder’s shot was saved in the middle by Maine goalkeeper Lauren Swant.

After defending against a pair of corners, UAlbany earned one of its own in the 77th minute, but did not get off a shot.  Despite holding on two Maine shots in the final part of the half, the Great Danes could not make up the deficit and fell 2-1.

Quinn’s goal in the first half was her first of the season.  Ubert saved six shots in the defeat.

For Maine, Achille’s game-winner was her fourth goal of the year, while Malone got her third.

UAlbany will play its final game of the 2013 season on Sunday, hosting UMass Lowell at Bob Ford Field for a 1 p.m. game.
