Men’s XC Takes 22nd At Regionals

BRONX, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s cross country team competed in the Northeast Regional Championship on Friday, taking 22nd place, scoring 577 points.  The meet featured 255 athletes from 37 teams, and was the first time the men’s team had competed at 10K, after running exclusively 8K events all season.

Chris Buchanan once again paced the Danes for the race.  Buchanan finished 60th overall with a time of 31:34.6, a new career best by 13 seconds.  Today’s result marked the fifth time in six races that Buchanan has been the top finishing athlete for UAlbany.

Following Buchanan was James Sommer in 84th place with a time of 32:01.8.  Sommer was top UAlbany finisher at the UAlbany XC Invitational in October, marking the only time on the season Buchanan did not finish first on the team.  Sommer also set a new personal best today, improving his time by 38 seconds.

Dylan Lowry finished third for UAlbany.  Lowry came in 131st place with a time of 32:40.0.  Rounding out UAlbany’s scoring athletes were Youness Benzaid, who finished 148th in 33:00.3, and Jonathan Moore, who finished 165th in 33:16.8.  Peter Schweitzer, who finished 198th with a time of 34:00.7, and Eric Billinson, who finished 199th with a time of 34:03.3, also competed for UAlbany.

Syracuse scored 57 points to take the team title, finishing two spots ahead of their Northeast ranking.  Columbia, who had held the top spot in the rankings, finished second overall.  Iona finished third, one spot below their ranking by virtue of the Syracuse victory.  Fourth place Providence, fifth place Dartmouth, sixth place Harvard, seventh place Yale, and eighth place Central Connecticut State all finished in the same spot as their ranking.  Cornell outraced their ranking by one spot to take ninth, and Binghamton improved on their ranking by four spots to take 10th.  Harvard senior Maksim Korolev took the individual title, completing the course in 30:11.6, seven seconds faster than second place.
