ALBANY, N.Y. – The Great Danes host in-state opponent Colgate at SEFCU Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m. to finish out the 2013 calendar year and revive a rivalry that has not seen a game since 2008.
Before the game, UAlbany will retire the numbers of Ebone Henry and Julie Forster, honoring the careers of two of the best Great Danes of all-time.
UAlbany, standing at 8-2 on the year and 10th in the mid-major poll, is looking to snap a two-game losing streak, returning home after an 80-51 defeat to Duke in Durham on Thursday. Colgate, a member of the Patriot League, has won its last three games to come into this game at 4-5. The Raiders are playing their third straight road game, last defeating Robert Morris 68-61 on December 14th.
Colgate leads the overall series 8-2. The schools last played in Hamilton in 2008, with Colgate winning 48-46. UAlbany won in 2007 in SEFCU 86-62 in its last home game in the series.
The Great Danes have two players in the top-six in the America East in scoring. Fresh off a 24-point performance against Duke, Shereesha Richards is averaging 23.1 points and 10.1 rebounds a contest. Sarah Royals is sixth in the league with 13.5 points a game, leading the conference with over five assists a contest.
After getting the 8-seed in the Patriot League tournament last year, Colgate upset 1-seed Army to earn the program’s second double digit win season since the 2005-06 season. Head Coach Nicci Hays Fort enters her third year with the program. The Raiders are led in scoring by senior guard captain Lauyrn Kobiela, who shoots 43.7% for 12.6 points and 4.7 assists per game. Junior forward Carole Harris is the team’s leading rebounder at 8.1 rebounds a game, scoring 11.4 points per contest. One other player averages double digits; junior Mariah Jones has taken 43 three-point shots with 13 makes, averaging 11.1 points and 3.7 assists per game.
