Men’s Track Takes Four Events At Penn State Relays

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University at Albany men’s indoor track and field team visited Penn State University over the weekend to officially kick off the 2013-14 indoor season at the non-scoring Penn State Relays. The Danes took first place in four events on the day. Junior Alexander Bowen Jr. won the high jump, junior Christopher Buchanan won the 3,000, junior John DeLallo won the mile, and junior Andrew Pirnie won the 1,000.
Bowen’s mark of 7’-2.5” matches his performance from the RAAC Classic in early December, and is less than one inch off his personal best in the event. Buchanan’s 8:24:45 represents a nearly two-second personal best, and bumps him up one spot to sixth on UAlbany’s all-time list. DeLallo took the mile in 4:14.82, and Pirnie won the 1,000 in 2:28.71.
The Danes qualified two athletes to the finals of the 60. Senior Kareem Morris placed third in 6.85, and freshman Robert Harris III placed fourth in 6.98. In the 500, UAlbany placed three in the top 10. Sohomore Taariq Jones placed seventh in 1:05.38, sophomore Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong placed eighth in 1:05.66, and senior Larry Ramirez placed 10th in 1:05.79. Seven of the eight UAlbany athletes competing in the 500 finished with a time gap of less than two seconds.
UAlbany placed three athletes in the top four in the mile. Joining DeLallo was junior Zachary Cook, who placed third in 4:19.02, and senior Dylan Lowry, who placed fourth in 4:20.04. The high jump broke down identically, with Bowen winning, freshman Youssef Benzamia taking third with a mark of 6’-8.25”, and freshman Kinglsey Ogbonna taking fourth with a mark of 6’-6.25”. The pole vault fell just shy of matching the performances from the mile and high jump. Freshman Nathan Hiett placed second with a mark of 16’-0.75”. He was followed by seniors Matthew Catera in fourth place with a mark of 15’-1” and Nicholas Mattera in fifth place with a mark of 14’-1.25”. Catera also took fourth in the 60 hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.31.
The relay events saw UAlbany’s ‘A’ team place fourth in the 4×400, with a time of 3:19.43, and third in the 4×800, with a time of 7:46.98. Obeng-Agyapong and Jones were joined by sophomore Jason Tomlinson and junior Ryan Small on the 4×400 and Cook, Ramirez, Lowry, and DeLallo made up the 4×800 squad.
UAlbany will host its own home meet, the Great Dane Classic on Friday, January 17 at the Armory in New York City.
