ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team has rallied around sophomore attack Whitney Corby in the wake of a serious car crash she as involved in at the end of December 2013.

Corby was on her way to the gym near her hometown of Coming, N.Y., around 10 p.m., when her car skid on black ice and crashed into a tree. She was pulled from her vehicle and air lifted to Robert Packer Hospital with a fractured skull, head trauma, a broken collarbone and a bruised lung.

Since the accident, Corby has been rehabbing at a head trauma center after being in a coma for one week. She has been able to clutch a stick and toss a lacrosse ball, despite not being able to walk on her own. The sophomore is scheduled to be released from the rehab center on Feb. 13.

Corby’s mother Teresa posts regularly on a blog through caringbridge.org with updates about her progress. The women’s lacrosse team will also be wearing purple arm bands this season that say “Whit” to raise awareness and honor their teammate.

UAlbany students, staff, alumni and fans have multiple venues available to support the Whitney Corby fundraising efforts. Bracelets are for sale for $ 5.00, with all the proceeds going directly to Whitney’s family, and can be purchased by emailing assistant coach Tee Ladouceur at tladouceur@albany.edu. The UAlbany track & field team has already purchased 100 bracelets to jump-start the initiative. Donations are also being accepted through the Caring Bridge website.

Bobby T’s Sports Grill in on North Allen Street in Albany will also be holding a fundraising event on Feb. 16, called “Wings for Whitney.” Ten percent of all food purchases at the sports grill between 12 and 4 p.m., will cover recovery costs.
