Benzamia Named Field Performer Of The Week
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East Conference has awarded University at Albany freshman Youssef Benzamia as the Week Seven men’s field performer of the week. Benzamia is the sixth UAlbany athlete to be honored this season as a performer of the week, following Alexander Bowen, Kathryn Fanning, Chris Buchanan, Silvia Del Fava, and Paige Vadnais. He shares the award this week with UMass Lowell’s Robert Allen, Stony Brook’s Olivia Burne, and Vermont’s Brittany St. Clair.
The Nice, France native traveled with his teammates to the Armory in New York City for the Armory Collegiate Invitational. Benzamia won the college section of the long jump with a mark of 24’-5.75” in his first time competing in the event all season. Not only did Benzamia hit the IC4A qualifying standard for long jump, to go along with his qualifying mark for the high jump he earned in January at the Penn State Indoor Relays, he also launched himself into a tie for second place on the all-time UAlbany indoor list. He shares the spot with Fred Casimo, who jumped the same distance in 2010.
Next up for the Danes is either the two-day NCAA Division I Invitational on the oversized track at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, or a return to the Armory for the third consecutive week to compete in the Millrose Games. Two weeks from now, the Armory will host the America East Indoor Championships.
