Women’s Tennis Falls in Tight Match at Army, 4-3
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s tennis team (5-3), fell 4-3 against Army (10-1) on Friday night in a tightly contested match at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
The Great Danes earned the first point of the match after winning two of three doubles matches. Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala downed the Army tandem 8-6, while Paulina Torres and Mireille Hermans dominated in their doubles match, 8-2.
UAlbany forfeited the No. 6 singles match, and the score was locked at 3-3 after five of six singles matches had concluded. Torres retired in the No. 4 slot after falling 7-5 in the first set, and the Black Knights went on to win despite the Great Danes emerging victorious in No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Gordon Graham’s squad continues its 2014 campaign at Princeton with matches against the Tigers and Seton Hall on March 1 and 2, respectively.
