UAlbany Men’s Lacrosse Takes on Canisius in Tuesday Mid-Week Matchup

ALBANY, N.Y. – Before America East play begins this weekend for UAlbany, the Great Danes will host in-state foe Canisius on Tuesday, March 25th at 3 p.m. at John Fallon Field.

Tickets for the UAlbany-Canisius game are $ 7 for general admission and $ 2 for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and over.  The game will also be broadcast online on AmericaEast.tv.

After UAlbany’s victory over Penn State, the Great Danes rose to #13 in the USILA Coaches Poll and #15 in the Warrior DI Media Poll.  Though currently unranked, Canisius has formerly received votes in each poll.

Facing its fifth ranked-opponent in six games, UAlbany took down Penn State on the road 17-10 on Saturday to enter Tuesday at 3-3.  Canisius is coming off an 8-6 league loss to Detroit on Sunday to come into the game at 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Each program will play another member of the opposing team’s conference later this season.  In April, UAlbany will take on arch-rival Siena, while Canisius takes on in-state opponent Binghamton.

UAlbany has the top scoring offense in all of Division I averaging 16 goals a game in its first six contests.  Lyle Thompson already has an NCAA-high 29 assists and 44 points for a DI-best 7.3 a game, while brother Miles Thompson earns an NCAA-best 4.3 goals a game, tallying 26 goals and 11 assists.  Ty Thompson stands 20th in DI with 2.7 goals a game, totaling 16 thus far.

Blaze Riorden is currently leading all of Division I with 16.2 saves per game, earning a 59.1% save percentage, fifth in DI.  He has had at least 15 saves each of his last five games.  Helping protect the cage in front of Riorden is Cody Futia, who has six caused turnovers.  Breaking into the starting lineup recently is James Burdette, who has seven caused turnovers.

Canisius won its first two games of the season, but has since fallen in four of its last five.  The playmaker for the Canisius offense is junior middie Tim Edwards, who is third in DI with a 69% faceoff winning % and leads the Golden Griffins with 15 points off seven goals and eight assists.  At attack, sophomore Billy Jacobbi has a team-high 10 goals, while junior Austin Romantic has eight goals.

Junior Alex Govenettio has a 54.1% save percentage in goal, allowing 8.78 goals per game.  His main protectors include senior LSM Kevin Collins, tallying eight caused turnovers and 13 ground balls, and senior close defenseman DJ Giacobbo, who has 13 ground balls, four caused turnovers and two assists.
