Field Hockey Earns NFHCA Academic Accolades

ALBANY, N.Y.- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association honored University at Albany field hockey last week for its academic accomplishments in the 2013 season. The Great Danes earned the National Academic Team Award for a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen Molly Mariano and Taylor Schwoyer were named Scholars of Distinction, and nine Great Danes were selected to the National Academic Squad.

Phil Sykes’ 2013 Great Danes were honored as part of the NFHCA National Academic Team Award, which awards teams with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the first semester of 2013-14. In Division I, 72 teams earned the 2013 National Academic Team Award. UAlbany posted a team GPA of 3.16 in the fall.

Freshmen Molly Mariano and Taylor Schwoyer were selected as NFHCA Scholars of Distinction after earning 4.0 GPAs in the fall semester. A student-athlete must achieve a GPA of 3.90 or higher in the first semester of the academic year to be named a Scholar of Distinction.

Nine Great Danes were honored on the National Academic Squad, including Celia D’Agostino, Paula Heuser, Jordyn Homyak, Molly Mariano, Amy Nicklin, Maxi Primus, Taylor Schwoyer, Fiori Van Rijswijk and Daphne Voormolen. Student-athletes must attain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester to be named to the National Academic Squad. Eight of UAlbany’s nine honorees had a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

UAlbany had two student-athletes selected as NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction last season, D’Agostino and Brianna Schwoyer. Five of this year’s National Academic Squad honorees also earned the award last season. Voormolen is a three-time National Academic Squad awardee.
