ALBANY, N.Y..- University at Albany field hockey associate head coach Andy Thornton heads to Uruguay later this week to coach the U.S. Men’s Indoor Pan America Squad, and compete for a spot in the Indoor World Cup in February of 2015.
“We are looking forward to this tournament and a chance to test ourselves against the best the Pan Ams have to offer,” Thornton told USA Field Hockey. “If we play to a high level and with a bit of luck, I am confident we can get a good result down in Uruguay.”
The Pan Am Cup pits the United States against Argentina, Canada, Guyana and Uruguay. The Americans will face Uruguay in the first of a three-game round robin. Thornton’s squad meets Guyana and Canada in its subsequent games. Following the round robin, the top two teams will compete in the final, with the winner qualifying for the Indoor World Cup set to take place in Leipzig, Germany in February of 2015.
While Thornton makes the trek to Uruguay this weekend, the UAlbany field hockey team heads to Charlottesville, Va., for a round robin of its own against Kent State, Penn State and Virginia to conclude exhibition play.
