Baseball Tops Marist, 7-6, In 10 Innings

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After Marist rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extras, the University at Albany baseball team captured a 7-6 victory over the hosting Red Foxes Tuesday in a 10-inning affair. For the second consecutive game, junior Alex Lushkevich scored the game-winning run, getting driven home on sophomore Richard Bacon’s RBI double. The Great Danes improved to 7-16 overall, while Marist fell to 8-21 on the season.

Junior Cameron Sorgie (2-2) earned the win on the mound, tossing the ninth and tenth frames, allowing two runs, two hits, and three walks, while striking out three. Terry Dugdale tossed the opening three innings, Joey Moore threw the next three, and Stephen Carey hurled the seventh and eighth frames.

Offensively, UAlbany outhit the Red Foxes, 12-9, led by D.J. Hoagboon (2-for-4), Lushkevich (2-for-4), Bacon (2-for-4), and Jeff VonMoser’s (2-for-5) multi-hit efforts. Josh Nethaway and Bacon piloted the team with two RBI each.

In the bottom of the second, Marist took a 1-0 lead, using a walk and an RBI single by Pat Welsh. The Great Danes answered with two runs in the third, as Adam Mund drew a leadoff walk and VonMoser ripped an RBI double and then scored from third when Bullard was caught in a stealing attempt rundown.

Scoring one run in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth, the Red Foxes took a 4-2 advantage, before UAlbany came storming back with three runs in the sixth. Hoagboon and Bullard knocked back-to-back singles to lead the inning off, and crossed home on Nethaway’s game-tying double to left-centerfield. With two outs, Mund kept the rally going with an RBI single to left, giving UAlbany a 5-4 lead.

The Great Danes added another run in the eighth when Lushkevich singled, stole second, and scored on Bacon’s RBI single through the left side.

Setting down his first two batters with a strikeout and a flyout in the bottom of the ninth, Sorgie was one strike away from ending the game for UAlbany, but the Red Foxes rallied, sparked by Graham McIntire’s single. Back-to-back walks then set up Steve Laurino’s two-run scoring double up the middle, tying the ballgame. After a hit by pitch, Sorgie then logged a strikeout, escaping the bases loaded jam.

In the 10th, Lushkevich lined a one-out single up the middle, and with two outs, Bacon came through with an RBI double to left-center for a 7-6 advantage.

In the bottom of the inning, Sorgie held the Red Foxes off the board, securing the win.

Marist’s Chris Napolitano (0-2) took the loss, throwing the final four innings of the game.

Up next, the Great Danes are back home Saturday and Sunday, hosting UMBC for an America East three-game series.
