MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY – University at Albany field hockey associate head coach Andy Thornton spearheaded a silver medal finish for USA at the 2014 Indoor Hockey Pan American Cup on Saturday. The Americans fell 4-2 to Canada in the final.
“I am really proud of the guys this evening, we showed character to come back from 2-0 down,” said Coach Thornton. “We had a couple of looks to tie the game but it was not to be. Canada pressed us really well and took their chances. They deserved the victory and I wish them all the best at the World Cup.”
Thornton’s squad qualified for the Pan Am final after downing Uruguay 4-0 on April 7 and Guyana 7-4 on April 8. The U.S. knocked Argentina out of championship contention on April 9 with a 4-3 win to earn a spot in the final. The Americans first faced the Canadians in the final game of round robin competition, falling 4-0.
The Americans rebounded in the championship game to come within one goal, 3-2 of Canada late in the second half. After opportunities to tie the game came and went, Canada converted on a penalty corner to secure the 4-2 win.
Canada will return to the Men’s Indoor Hockey World Cup for the fourth consecutive time in Leipzig, Germany in 2015. Germany has won every Indoor Hockey World Cup dating back to 2003.
