No. 19/18 Women’s Lacrosse Ends Home Regular Season with 18-4 Win Against Columbia

ALBANY, N.Y.-  No. 19/18 University at Albany women’s lacrosse (11-2, 2-1 AE) won its final home nonconference game on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 18-4 against Columbia (3-8, 0-5 Ivy). Maureen Keggins led the Great Danes with six points (2g, 4a).

UAlbany got out to a 6-0 lead in the first seven minutes. The Great Danes won the first four draws to set up goals for Ariana Parker, Allie Phelan, Keggins and Bowles. Keggins also picked up an assist on Bowles’ goal to make the score 4-0.

After Keggins forced a turnover, Parker notched her second goal of the game moments later. Phelan also tallied her second goal of the game at the 23:42 mark of the first half to put the Purple & Gold up 6-0.

Neither team found the back of the cage for eight minutes mid-way through the second half, as the Great Danes and Lions traded turnovers back and forth. Phelan broke the drought on a free position goal with 12 minutes to go in the first half. The goal marked the senior’s 30th of the season.

Keggins recorded two points to end the half, assisting on Julie Cryderman’s goal with six minutes left in the first period and scoring herself to give UAlbany a  9-2 at the break.

Columbia and UAlbany went back and forth with turnovers again to open the second half. The Great Danes eventually cleared and Rachel Bowles found Dakotah Savitcheff for her first goal of the game.

Savitcheff tallied her second consecutive goal quickly after Columbia turned the ball over in front of the UAlbany net, but the Lions came back to make it 11-3.

Keggins found Katherine Sweeney in front of the cage for the easy goal with 18 minutes left in the game. Nichole Eamer found the handle with her first goal on a free position shot six minutes later.

Bowles scored three of the next four goals for UAlbany to make the score 17-4. Amanda Obenshain concluded scoring with two minutes left.

Nine different Great Danes scored in the win. Keggins matched her single-game career high in points and assists with six and four, respectively. Lennon won seven draw controls, and is now 29 away from tallying 100 for the season. The senior has already won 202 draws in her career and ranks second in Division I program history.

UAlbany women’s lacrosse (11-2, 2-1 AE) concludes the regular season with two games on the road. The Great Danes first visit UMBC (7-6, 1-2 AE) at noon on Saturday, April 19. John Battaglino’s squad will then face New Hampshire (7-7, 2-1 AE) in Durham on Saturday, April 26 at noon.
