Bonner and Van Rijswijk Score Two Apiece to Lead No. 12 UAlbany Over Columbia 6-0

NEW YORK, N.Y.- University at Albany field hockey (12-2, 2-0 AE) tallied its second shutout of the weekend in a 6-0 win at Columbia on Sunday afternoon.

“I was very pleased with our team effort today, especially playing the day after a league game,” said head coach Phil Sykes. “We could’ve gotten sloppy, but we had one of our best first halves this season. We were hungry today and it showed.”

Penalty corner specialist Fiori Van Rijswijk was the first to get UAlbany on the board in the fourth minute. The sophomore recorded her third goal of the season on a scramble after inserting a penalty corner. Van Rijswijk scored again on a penalty corner rebound in the 30th minute to conclude scoring in the first half.

Junior Kelly Bonner also notched two goals in the win over the Lions. The forward knocked in a feed from Jaclyn Hibbs in the 24th minute, and scored on a deflection late in the second half. Hibbs recorded her first UAlbany career point on the assist.

Daphne Voormolen and Liza Morgan scored the other two goals for the Great Danes. Voormolen converted on a long pass from fellow captain Corrine McConville to make the score 2-0 early in the first half. Morgan tipped in a pass from Jordyn Homyak with four second left in regulation. Homyak tallied her first point this season.

Maxi Primus earned her seventh shutout and 11th win with the victory.

Thirteen different Great Danes have recorded a point so far this season, with eight players totaling 10 points or more, and three with 20 points or more.

UAlbany hosts New Hampshire in a crucial America East contest on Friday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m.
