Castro, Puerto Rico, Bow Out Of Pan American Classic
San Juan, Puerto Rico– Play concluded at the Pan American Softball Classic Sunday with Team USA defeating Canada 8-1 in the Gold Medal game.
UAlbany first baseman Charlise Castro brought word of the Classic to campus as the starting first basemen for the Puerto Rican squad. Puerto Rico finished group play with a 5-2 record, earning third place behind the Dominican Republic and Canada.
Canada eventually eliminated Puerto Rico in the semi-final round. In her final four games, Castro batted .455 with two home runs and six RBIs, including a five-RBI effort against Colombia. She played every game in the Classic at first base, finishing the nine-day tournament batting .345 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 10 games.
Puerto Rico has qualified for the 2014 Central American Games in Veracruz, Mexico, the 2014 Women’s World Championship in Haarlem, Netherlands, and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
