Cocks, Snow, and MacFawn Earn All-Region Honors

NFCA Division I All-Region Teams

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday the members of the regional first, second, and third teams for the 2014 season.  UAlbany had three representatives named for the Northeast awards.  Junior shortstop Maggie Cocks, and freshman catcher (named as utility player) Elizabeth Snow earned first team recognition, and senior pitcher Brittany MacFawn was named to the second team.

Cocks led the America East in hitting with a .409 batting average through the regular season.  Cocks was also second in on base percentage, at .465, and second in hits, with 52.  Additionally, Cocks hit four home runs and 32 RBIs, and scored 38 runs of her own.  She was named America East Player of the Week on May 5.

Snow led the America East in doubles with 14 in her first season as a collegian.  She was named America East Rookie of the Year, and was named conference Rookie of the Week three times, on February 25, April 14, and April 28.  She was second on the team in hits (47) and home runs (6), and third in RBIs (30).  Snow is responsible for forcing a deciding final game against Stony Brook in the America East Tournament championship round, when she hit a walk-off, three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat defending champion, host, and top seeded Stony Brook 3-2.

MacFawn was named the America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player.  She started and finished both games in the championship round of the conference tournament, going 17.0 innings giving up only three runs.  She was named America East Pitcher of the Week three times, on April 7, April 14, and May 5.  MacFawn threw two consecutive no-hitters, against UMass-Lowell in her final home start, and against UMBC.  MacFawn became UAlbany’s all-time leader in strikeouts, breaking Leah McIntosh’s record of 725, and wins, breaking Casey Halloran’s record of 73.  Additionally, MacFawn became the all-time leader in appearances, complete games, starts, and innings pitched.  She led the conference in ERA, with a 1.78, and strikeouts, with 182.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-American teams.

Three programs had all eight of their nominated players earn all-region accolades:  No. 10 Arizona, No. 12 Oklahoma and Hofstra. No. 1 Oregon, No. 7 Georgia, No. 13 Michigan and No. 20 Notre Dame followed closely behind with seven selections each, while No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 6 Florida, No. 8 Washington, No. 18 Tulsa, Wisconsin and Purdue all picked up six nods. The eight-ranked Huskies and the 20th-rated Fighting Irish both reaped five first-team choices to guide the list in that category.

The 2014 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 28, via NFCA.org.
