Field Hockey Opens Four-Game Homestand Against Cornell on Sunday

ALBANY, N.Y.- The University at Albany field hockey team looks to continue its winning streak against Cornell on Sunday at 2 p.m., at Alumni Field.

The all-time series between the Great Danes and the Big Red is currently tied at three games apiece. UAlbany won the last meeting in September of 2008 1-0.

The Great Danes are riding a two-game winning streak after opening weekend, downing Bryant 8-0 and Providence 4-1. Sophomore Liza Morgan led the squad on offense with five goals between the two games. She was named America East Player of the Week for her efforts.

Also gracing the league honors last week was Paula Heuser. The freshman scored one goal and added three assists to be named America East Rookie of the Week.

Morgan leads all Great Danes in points with 10, which is already more than she totaled in 2012. Senior Corrine McConville converted on two penalty strokes and notched an assist last weekend to total five points along with Heuser.

Heuser and Molly Mariano recorded their first collegiate points last weekend. Mariano scored a goal and tallied an assist in the win against Bryant.

With a victory against Cornell, the Great Danes will open the season 3-0 for the first time since 2010.

SCOUTING THE BIG RED:

Cornell opens its season against Lock Haven on Friday night. The Big Red finished tied for fourth in last year’s Ivy League standings. Cornell returns 2012 NFHCA All-Region honorees Hannah Balleza and Carolyn Horner. Balleza ranks third all-time for the Big Red in goals with 31 and fifth in points with 74.
