Great Danes Fall on the Road to Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University at Albany women’s soccer team had a tough end to its weekend as it fell to Florida Gulf Coast 5-0 on Sunday at FGCU Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic Sun) got on the scoreboard in the opening minute after Kayley Clay received a cross from Juila Roddar and scored a goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

UAlbany (1-1-0, 0-0-0 America East) looked to counter in the next few minutes.  Helena Olafsdottir got into the box and took aim on the goal, but her shot was saved by Brittany Brown.  Minutes later, UAlbany earned corner kicks, but the Great Danes were not able to convert.

In goal, Dani Britt saved a couple of shots from the left side in the 19th and 21st minutes to hold the score at 1-0.

In the 26th minute, Roddar set up Ali Rogers inside the box.  Rogers converted the shot opportunity to put FGCU up 2-0.

Stephanie Nelle got a look at the top of box at minute 33 and took a shot, but her attempt was saved.

FGCU added to its lead on a counterattack in the 41st minute after Meghan Hayden got the pass from Ashley Parks and scored.  Before the half ended, an FGCU corner kick from Melissa Arnold was headed into the goal after a deflection by Tessa Berger to put the Eagles up 4-0 into halftime.

The Great Danes looked to regroup for the second half.  In the left side of the box, Leanne Miller took a shot on the 52nd minute, but her attempt was saved by Brown.

An Arnold corner kick and subsequent header by Sarah Lowicki was saved by Britt in the 60th minute.  Britt got her third save of the game.

Four minutes later, Tabitha Tindell netted a 18-yard shot to make the score 5-0 FGCU.

UAlbany got a look in the 68th minute as Alexa Schneider kicked towards the net, again in the 75th minute with a shot from Erin Savoldy and a third time on a counterattack from Caitlyn Paltsios in minute 79, but Brown saved all three attempts, keeping the deficit at five.

The Great Danes were not able to get another attempt and fell in the contest to the Eagles.

All six UAlbany shots, one each from six different players, were on goal.  Nelle played all 90 minutes of the game and had a shot on goal.

For the Eagles, Roddar finished with a pair of assists and had a shot on goal.

The Great Danes return to New York for a road game against Syracuse on Friday, August 30th at 7 p.m.
