The Expo
By: LG
The LG Expo GW820 integrates a full range of multimedia
tools into the convenience of a smartphone. The full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth
connection, optional projector, and both IM and MMS messaging lets this smartphone
live up to its name as an “exposition.”
The Expo is equipped with a large, 3.2-inch touch screen and
full QWERTY keyboard. The screen has a 16 million color display, impressive 480
x 800, and an adequate response time. However, don’t expect the responsiveness
of an iPod touch/iPhone which has a capacitive screen rather than a resistive.
It will take a little getting used to if you haven’t used similar touch screen
devices, but nothing time wouldn’t correct. Likewise, the full slide out QWERTY
keyboard is great with large print keys and hotkeys to access email and other
features. The Expo is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor to unlock and
gain access as well as a scrolling tool to navigate through the menus. At most,
the sensor feature is unnecessary and takes a couple tries for recognition. It
also traps excess dust most likely contributing to its lack of functionality,
but is optional and can be disabled.
The GW820 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 with Microsoft Office
and Internet Explorer Mobile. Internet Explorer is a little slow on the boot up
time and maybe better off seeking alternative software. On the other hand,
Windows Office is great with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Windows Email. The
Expo itself runs on an impressive 1Ghz processor with Quad-band and HSPDA/UMTS.
Furthermore, the smart phone comes with a slew of additional “out of the box”
trial software and applications such as the WinMo Marketplace and similar
applications that utilize the Expo’s WiFi. Overall the software is a bit
lacking in capabilities and you may need to seek replacement software. In
addition to the other features, the camera I found to be a pleasant surprise.
It’s a 5.0 megapixel camera with an auto flash and takes great pictures
relative to other smart phones on the market. The 2.1 Bluetooth version uses
EDR, or Enhanced Data Rate to significantly improve the data transmissions
which becomes evident. Unfortunately, the battery life of the phone is a bit
disappointing with a standard 1500mAh Lithium-Polymer.
The LG Expo GW820 is an all around top notch smart phone
with impressive features and the optional Texas Instruments Pico Projector
makes this phone one everyone can enjoy. The Pico Projector is sold separately
for around 179$.
