Men’s Basketball Lands Five on 2013-14 NABC Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The University at Albany men’s basketball team had a program-record five student-athletes on the 2013-14 NABC Honors Court, the organization announced on Wednesday night. Among the honorees were seniors Luke Devlin, John Puk and David Wiegmann, as well as juniors Peter Hooley and Sam Rowley.

In order to be named to the NABC Honors Court, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the end of the academic year. None of UAlbany’s five awardees concluded the 2013-14 academic year with a GPA lower than a 3.30.

Luke Devlin graduated in the spring with 3.62 GPA and a degree in business administration. The three-time captain was also three-time America East Academic Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient.

John Puk concluded his UAlbany career in the spring with a degree in biology and a GPA of 3.31. Puk became the program’s Division I leader in career blocks in his senior season, in addition to receiving America East All-Defensive Team accolades.

David Wiegmann graduated in May with a 3.99 GPA and a degree in human biology. He was named a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team and an America East Presidential Scholar for achieving a 3.70 or above upon graduation. The Breese, Ill., native was also awarded the 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

Peter Hooley was named the America East Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in 2013-14. The junior with two years of eligibility remaining is currently pursuing degrees in journalism and psychology. He was also named to the 2014 America East All-Academic squad with a GPA of 3.51.

Sam Rowley enters his senior season in 2014-15 with a GPA of 3.63 with a double major in business administration and math. He garnered his second straight America East All-Academic team bid in 2013-14.

The Purple & Gold landed the most student-athletes on the NABC Honors Court of any America East program. UAlbany men’s basketball was also awarded the NABC Team Academic Excellence award on Wednesday. The Great Danes won the America East Men’s Basketball Academic Cup in 2013-14. For the second consecutive year, the squad won its respective sport’s academic award and the conference tournament. It was the third straight year the Great Danes won the league’s academic award and fifth overall.
