Men’s Indoor Track Ranked For Sixth Straight Week
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its Week Six regional rankings Monday evening, and once again the University at Albany men’s indoor track program finds itself holding a spot among the top 15 teams in the Northeast Region. After dropping in the poll in Week Five, due to the odd timing of the America East Conference Championship that ended after the new poll was calculated, the Danes bounced back in the poll this week, jumping two spots to eighth, despite the majority of the team enjoying a weekend without competition.
The UAlbany men jumped three teams this week in Iona, Army, and Boston University, but were themselves jumped by Dartmouth, which improved the most of any team from last week, jumping four spots to seventh. There remained no change in the top six spots, and Cornell maintained its commanding lead over Buffalo in the top two, although the gap has closed by a notable margin. A week ago, Cornell led Buffalo by a score of 411.97 to 290.85. This week, Cornell leads 432.88 to 350.72.
In the individual rankings, Alfonso Scannapieco’s performance at America East Championships has placed him first overall in the Northeast in the pole vault. Alexander Bowen and Youssef Benzamia remain second in the high jump and the long jump, respectively. Matthew Campbell joins Bowen in the high jump, sitting himself in eighth place. Finally, Matthew Catera holds eighth place in the heptathlon.
UAlbany’s competition schedule was decidedly less favorable to the women’s squad, which dropped out of the top-15 entirely, despite a dominating victory at America East Championships. This week, the women are on the outside looking in, but only just as they are ranked 16th. They hold three spots in the individual events. Aiyanna James is sixth in the region in the long jump, Michelle Anthony is eighth in the 60 hurdles, and the school-record setting 4×400 relay is seventh. The top-11 teams remained unchanged from last week.
This week, UAlbany will travel to Boston University for IC4A and ECAC championships, from Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 9.
