Men’s Outdoor Track Wraps First Meet

CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO – Just over one week after Alexander Bowen competed in the high jump as the University at Albany’s sole representative at the Division I Indoor National Championships, the outdoor track season has begun.  UAlbany’s men and women traveled south to Puerto Rico for a few days of training in warmer weather, capped off by the first competition of the season in the Spring Break Classic.

UAlbany’s 4×100 relay team of Robert Harris, Jaymen Teemer, Donald Williams, and Jonathan Santana kicked off proceedings for the Danes, claiming victory in a four-team pool with a time of 40.70.  Next, John DeLallo led a UAlbany sweep of the top two places in the 1,500.  DeLallo ran 3:54.58, and Dylan Lowry finished in 4:01.15.  Jason Tomlinson placed sixth in the 400, running 48.54.  Taariq Jones placed ninth in the same event, running 48.70.

In the 800, UAlbany placed athletes fourth through seventh overall.  Youness Benzaid finished fourth in 1:54.73.  DeLallo was fifth in 1:55.24.  Zach Cook was sixth in 1:55.58.  Andrew Pirnie was seventh in 1:55.70.  UAlbany placed a similar grouping in the 400 hurdles.  Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong placed third overall in 53.19.  Youssef Benzamia was fourth in 53.24.  And Larry Ramirez was fifth in 54.12.

Santana placed 10th overall in the 200, running a time of 22.24.  Christopher Buchanan placed fourth in the 3,000 in 8:49.16.  Finally, UAlbany won the final event on the track, the 4×400 relay.  The team of Jones, Tomlinson, Ramirez, and Santana, ran 3:11.51, a time that is already about four seconds faster than UAlbany’s best time from the indoor season.

Moving to the field events, Abel Gilet placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 144’-6”.  Gilet also placed second in the shot put, throwing 49’-2”.  Alfonso Scannapieco placed fourth in the long jump, recording a mark of 23’-6.75”.  Nathan Hiett won the pole vault in 15’-1”.  Finally, UAlbany swept the top three places in the high jump.  Bowen placed first in 6’-10.75”.  Matthew Campbell placed second in 6’-8.75”.  Kinglsey Ogbanna also placed second, with the same mark as Campbell.

UAlbany will return home briefly before traveling again to their next meet.  Late next week, the team will compete at the Texas Relays at the University of Texas, and the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State University.
