Men’s Soccer Adds Bill Boyle to Coaching Staff

ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany men’s soccer head coach Trevor Gorman announced Friday that Bill Boyle has joined the coaching staff, effective immediately. Boyle begins his duties with the Great Danes after spending three years at Colgate.

“We are thrilled to add a coach of Bill’s quality, and experience, to our staff,” said Gorman. “He is an accomplished coach who fits in well with our program, and we’re excited for the positive impact we know he will immediately have.”

In his three years with the Raiders, Boyle proved his strength on the recruiting circuit with a nationally ranked 2014 class for Colgate. He also brought in six freshmen that made an immediate impact for the Raiders in 2013.

As a first-year assistant with Colgate in 2011, Boyle led the Raiders to their fifth Patriot League title and an NCAA appearance with a record of 11-5-6. Along the way, Boyle saw five players named All-Conference in the Patriot League, as well as the Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the league. Three Raiders also earned NSCAA All-Region accolades, with Patriot League Rookie of the Year Jimmy McLaughlin signing on with the Philadelphia Union.

Boyle spent one season with Michigan State in 2010-11 while earning his USSF A Coaching License. He primarily worked with the goalkeepers, as well as directing the day-to-day operations of the team and scouting opponents. The Spartans made an NCAA Third Round appearance that season, falling to North Carolina in penalty kicks.

The Michigan native has experience coaching at a variety of levels, including high school, club and NCAA Division III. Boyle was the head coach at D-III Olivet College outside of Detroit from 2005-08. He helped develop the Comets to achieve a program-best No. 14 ranking in 2009, after the team managed just four wins in MIAA play between 2002 and 2004.

Boyle kicked off his coaching career at his alma mater, Okemos High School in 2001. The Chieftains won the Division 1 State Championship under Boyle in 2004. He also coached the U-16 Real Colorado boy’s squad from 1999-2000.

A standout soccer player in high school and college, Boyle was a Mr. Michigan Runner-Up at Okemos after scoring 32 goals in his senior campaign. He proceeded to a standout four-year career at Hartwick College under NSCAA Walt Chyzowych Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Hartwick College Hall of Fame inductee Jim Lennox. Boyle played professionally for the Detroit Dynamite and the Cincinnati Riverhawks before beginning his coaching career.

Boyle graduated from Hartwick in 1998 with a degree in business management. He and his wife Melinda as well as son Liam and stepson Cody join the Great Dane family for the upcoming 2014 season.
