Men’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Overtime Streak to Three with 0-0 Tie Against Hartwick
ALBANY, N.Y..- University at Albany men’s soccer (4-9-4, 2-2-1 AE) concluded its nonconference schedule with a 0-0 tie against Hartwick on Monday night at Bob Ford Field.
“I thought we had some good moments tonight, some good possessions,” said head coach Trevor Gorman. “We had good combination play amongst our team, we just couldn’t quite take advantage. It’s something to build on for Saturday. We were fortunate to get a lot of guys in the game tonight, it’s just tough to not come away with the win.”
The teams combined for just five shots in the first half, with UAlbany earning the lone corner kick in the opening period.
Shot attempts picked up for the Purple & Gold mid-way through the first half. Dan Christiansen made a cross from the right side in the 22nd minute, nearly connecting with Jonathan Interiano for the header.
A corner kick from Philip Persson found Brandon Wilson’s head in the 29th minute, with the deflection rolling out to Leonardo Rodrigues. Rodrigues fired a shot just wide.
The Great Danes continued to pound the Hartwick net early in the second half. Anthony Rozzano broke through the Hawks midfield to fire a shot that hit the post in the 57th minute. Dominic McGarr nearly connected on a free kick in the 63rd minute.
Michael Pizzuti made several crucial saves toward the end of regulation. Pizzuti came out of the net to stop a Hartwick midfielder charging through the 18-yard box in the 74th minute. The freshman also got a hand on a dangerous header off a corner kick for the Hawks with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Brandon Wilson fired a line drive from the left side of the 18-yard box with less than five minutes remaining, but the Hartwick goalkeeper controlled the shot and made the save.
In the first overtime period, Rozzano and Interiano had chances in the 18-yard box, but couldn’t quite bury the ball in the back of the net.
The 0-0 tie against the Hawks marks UAlbany’s seventh overtime contest of the season.
The Great Danes return to action in an important America East game on Saturday at 7 p.m., against Hartford at Bob Ford Field. The Purple & Gold will also honor their seniors against the Hawks.
