Men’s Soccer Takes Momentum on the Road to Monmouth
ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany men’s soccer (1-4-1) looks to carry the momentum of a 2-1 victory over then-No. 22 Fairleigh Dickinson to West Long Branch, N.J., on Friday night.
UAlbany won its first game of the season in spectacular fashion on Sunday night. The Great Danes downed No. 22 Fairleigh Dickinson 2-1 with goals from Phil Denara and Brandon Wilson. It was the first soccer game played at Bob Ford Field, and the first UAlbany win recorded in the new stadium. Fairleigh Dickinson hadn’t allowed a goal in four games prior to the 2-1 loss.
The Great Danes had only scored one goal in five games prior to Sunday night. Junior captain Dominic McGarr notched his first career goal in a 2-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 1.
The Great Danes return home on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to Bob Ford Field at 7 p.m., when they take on Siena. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH:
Monmouth (1-3-1) begins its first season in the MAAC in 2013, making the transition from the NEC. The Hawks have caught two teams down the stretch for one win and one tie. Monmouth downed Villanova 2-1 in the final 37 seconds of the match on Sept. 11. Thomas Penfold scored to earn the Hawks their first win of the season.
Monmouth also came back in the final moments against Seton Hall on Sept. 6. Emmanuel Agyemang scored in the 90th minute to send the game to overtime, with the game eventually concluding with a 1-1 draw.
Senior midfielder Joseph Schmid was named to the preseason MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, and was also a 2012 All-Region and 2013 Preseason All-MAAC selection. Junior defenders Matt Jeffery and Agyemang also earned Preseason All-MAAC honors.
