Siemens Gigaset One

Gigaset One

By: Siemens

These days, there are more and more people who decide to drop their land line phone service in favor of just paying one bill for their cell phone and using that as their primary phone.  While this will end up saving you money, you lose the convenience of having phones in different rooms of your house that you can conveniently pick up to make or receive phone calls.  Many people end up having to carry their cell phone around with them at every second so they don’t miss any calls.  The Gigaset One was made to solve this problem by using your cell phone’s Bluetooth capabilities to connect it with the phones you already have in your home.

The Gigaset One is very simple to set up.  Since you have to connect your home phones directly to the device, it works best with cordless phones that have a central base station but several cordless sets.  Once you connect it to your home phone setup, you can pair up to three different cell phones at once with the device.  After you pair them for the first time, they will automatically connect when brought in range of your Gigaset One device.  As long as your cell phone is connected, any call that your cell phone receives will also cause your home phone to ring.  You can pick up any of the phones set up in your house to accept the call.  The caller ID on the handset will display the number calling just as your cell phone would.  Also if you have more than one cell phone connected to the device, you can have different ring styles programmed so that you know what cell phone is receiving a call.  It even lets you use call waiting for when you have multiple calls coming in at once even if the calls are coming from different cell phones.

What I liked about the Gigaset One is that it did exactly what it is supposed to.   When I had it set up, I would plug my phone in to charge at the end of the day and place it on the counter next to the Gigaset One.  If I received a phone call, it was usually much easier to get to one of my cordless phones rather than try to rush and get to my cell phone before it went to voicemail.  This resulted in a lot fewer missed calls which can be good if you do a lot of business with your cell phone and missing calls ends up costing a lot in wasted time.  I also liked that you could connect it to your computer using a USB cable so that you can easily update it when new software comes out.

What I didn’t like about the Gigaset One are that in order to take full advantage of it, you need to have a central base unit with multiple cordless sets that you can place around the house.  If you don’t currently have one, buying one can cost between 50-150 dollars.  If you don’t buy one, you will only be able to hook up two phones to the Gigaset One, but they will both have to be close enough to plug into the Gigaset.  This will in most cases be pointless because your cell phone needs to be within Bluetooth range of the unit to work anyway so your cell phone will most likely be right by the handset that you connect to the unit.

Overall, my experience with the Gigaset One went well.  Set up was easy and I didn’t have any major problems with it.  Contrary to my original belief, call clarity was just as good if not better than when I would use my cell phone directly.  If you often find yourself struggling to get to your cell phone in time at home, this product will be perfect for you.
