Softball Falls To Stony Brook In Second Tournament Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – After defeating Binghamton in their opening game of the America East Tournament, the University at Albany softball team advanced to the winner’s bracket to face top seed and host Stony Brook.  The game, originally scheduled for this morning at 11:00 a.m., was pushed to 2:30 p.m. due to inclement weather.  Stony Brook (34-16) defeated UAlbany (30-11) by a score of 9-0 in six innings.

Brittany MacFawn (17-6) started her second consecutive game for UAlbany, pitching all 5.2 innings of the game, giving up nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. 

Stony Brook scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, and three more in the bottom of the third.  After a scoreless fourth and fifth, Stony Brook scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a grand slam by the Seawolves’ center fielder, ending the game after taking a 9-0 lead.  UAlbany committed three errors during the game.

UAlbany’s best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the third inning, after Jess Tate worked a walk to lead off the inning.  She was thrown out at second when Alexa Toole hit into a fielder’s choice.  Vicky McFarland then hit a single, placing runners on first and second.  Kelly Costello grounded out to second, advancing Toole to third and McFarland to second.  But Maggie Cocks popped up to shortstop to end the inning, stranding the base runners.  Offensively, McFarland hit 1-3.  Charlise Castro hit 2-3 with a double.  And Toole hit 1-1.

As a result of the loss, UAlbany will play Binghamton once again in an elimination game on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.  Binghamton defeated and eliminated UMBC 2-1 in Friday’s late game.  The winner of the UAlbany/Binghamton game will face Stony Brook in the championship round on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.  Considering Stony Brook has yet to lose in the tournament, a loss by the Seawolves in that round would force a second game on Sunday to determine a champion.
