UAlbany Alum Chris Kivlen Named Assistant Coach at Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. – Former University at Albany alum and defensive coach Chris Kivlen has been named an assistant coach for Cornell University, the latter school announced Tuesday.
Kivlen played at UAlbany from 2002-05, helping UAlbany to three-straight America East titles as a defenseman. He spent the next six years as an assistant coach under Scott Marr, helping UAlbany win its first NCAA Tournament game in 2007 and having the 11th-ranked defense in the nation in 2008.
He spent the last three years as the head coach of Montclair State University in New Jersey. Under his leadership, the Red Hawks won the Skyline Conference all three years with a perfect 18-0 league record and 41-13 overall record, making the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. This past year, he coached the team to a 16-2 record and #14 USILA ranking, earning his third-consecutive Skyline Conference Coach of the Year honor.
Kivlen will serve as an assistant under newly-appointed head coach Matt Kerwick. As the interim head coach in 2014, Kerwick led Cornell to an 11-6 record and 5-1 tally in-conference for a share of the Ivy League regular season title. The Big Red played in the NCAA Tournament, falling in the first round to eventual-semifinalist Maryland.
