UAlbany Closes Ford Era With 24-3 Loss At Stony Brook

GAME STATS BOOK

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – While the score read 24-3 in favor of the hosting Stony Brook Seawolves Saturday evening at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, the smiles and greetings of University at Albany friends, family, former players, and supporters that surrounded Head Coach Bob Ford after the final horn sounded heavily outweighed the outcome.

The legacy of Coach Ford’s 44-seasons at UAlbany was the concentration of the night, and former players ranging from his very first season at the helm to recent graduates showered Coach with hugs and well wishes.  Ford, who started his coaching career at the age of 26 as the youngest head coach in the country, ended his tenure Saturday at the age of 76 – the oldest in the country — with 265 career wins, ranking first among active NCAA Division I coaches and fourth on the all-time FCS chart.

“I had an opportunity to deal with a lot of young people at a formidable time in their lives and I had an opportunity to handle a lot of great coaches and I’m proud of what they achieved.

“I want to congratulate Chuck Priore and Stony Brook. I thought they played well. Chuck was a captain and coach with us for a period of time. He is a classy coach and I appreciate everything he contributed to our program through the years.

Completing 16-of-35 passes, junior quarterback Will Fiacchi broke UAlbany’s single-season completions record with 207 this season, surpassing Dan DiLella’s 196. Fiacchi finished with 136 passing yards on the night, hitting top receiver senior Kevin Chillis seven times for a total of 45 yards.

On the ground, junior Omar Osbourne carried the ball 15 times, netting 57 rushing yards.

Defensively, TJ Idowu led the team with 14 tackles, including 10 solo, while Christian Dorsey and Alex Helmer followed closely with 10 and nine tackles, respectively.

Punting six times, Jonathan Martin averaged 42.5 yards per punt, dropping four inside the 20.

On their first drive of the game, the hosting Seawolves (5-6, 3-5 CAA) quickly set the tone, using 11 plays to cover 78-yards. Gambling early on, the Seawolves converted a 4th-and-6 play on the 26-yard line, as Lyle Negron connected an 18-yard pass to Malcolm Eugene. Two plays later, Negron capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush, and with the extra point, Stony Brook led 7-0 with 9:17 remaining in the first quarter.

Forcing the Great Danes to punt, the Seawolves struck again, as Tyler Fredericks finished Stony Brooks’ 10-play, 91-yard drive with a two-yard push into the end zone with 3:14 left in the opening quarter.

While UAlbany worked its way to midfield on the next drive, the Great Danes punted away. Martin’s 34-yard punt pinned the Seawolves at the nine. However, Stony Brook used just one play to get in the end zone, as Negron tossed a short pass to Eugene who turned it into a 91-yard touchdown connection, eluding tackles down the length of the UAlbany sideline. After the kick, the Seawolves held a 21-0 advantage with 14:32 remaining in the second quarter.

Plagued by penalties, neither squad was able to get anything going offensively for the remainder of the half. In the first half alone, the Great Danes were called for six penalties for 42-yards, while also losing freshman linebacker Marcel Ngachie for the rest of the game due to a roughing the passer penalty that resulted in ejection.

“I think if we had started the game at halftime we would have been a little better off,” said Ford. “We just struggled in the early going of the ball game. We got unraveled in the second half and started to play a little bit better.”

Out of the break, the Great Danes recorded their first points of the game, driving 57-yards on 10 plays. With a shot at the end zone, Fiacchi found Cole King in the back corner, but he was pushed out, forcing UAlbany to settle for a field goal. Tom O’Riordan’s 31-yard kick sailed through the uprights, making the score 21-3 with 10:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Both teams remained scoreless until Stony Brook made a 38-yard field goal with 11:09 remaining in the fourth, giving the Seawolves the final 24-3 advantage.

For Stony Brook, Negron completed 15-of-26 passes, totaling 262 passing yards. Running back James Kenner carried the ball 35 times, accruing 151 rushing yards, as the Seawolves totaled 456 yards of offense in the game.

UAlbany finished the 2013 season with a 1-11 overall mark and 0-8 record in the CAA.
