UAlbany Drops First Home Game to Hofstra

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Great Danes women’s soccer team tried to snap their losing streak against Hofstra on Sunday but fell to the Pride 6-0 in the first home game at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
UAlbany (1-4) got some early opportunities in the first half. Kelly Kempf put a free kick into the ox but no shot came. A minute later, Aubrey VanGorder ripped a corner kick into the box, but a jumping save by Emily Morphitis prevented a shot attempt.
In the 11th minute, Sam Scolarici found Leah Galton in the box. Galton shot from the left side and scored to give Hofstra (3-3) the lead. Two minutes later, Galton set up Scolarici near the goal box as Scolarici scored to make it 2-0 Hofstra.
The Great Danes tried to counter in the coming minutes. After a corner that did not result in a shot, the ball came to Kari Quinn from about 30 yards away. Quinn rocketed a shot, missing the cage just wide right. Later VanGorder had a similar opportunity and shot the ball, but right at the keeper on the left side of the net. The team held defensively the rest of the half as Hofstra led 2-0 at the break.
In the opening of the second half, coach Caitlin Colfer switched up her starting lineup, including putting Allison Carhart in the game. In the period’s opening minutes, Carhart got the ball near the edge of the 18-yard box, turned around and kicked hard, but the shot went high.
Hofstra got a corner kick chance in the 50th minute. Using the strong wind, Ruby Staplehurst’s shot found the far upper corner of the goal to make it 3-0 Hofstra.
Chances for UAlbany were few in the rest of the second half. Hofstra added three more goals on a Caylin Dudley free kick in minute #58, a breakaway from Scolarici in the 71st minute, and a rebound off a corner kick that Jeannine Molleda put in the goal in the 74th minute. UAlbany was not able to get on the board and fell 6-0.
Quinn led the Great Danes in shots with three, putting two on goal. Despite the loss, Alana Brennan made eight saves in the game.
For Hofstra, Scolarici finished with five points off two goals and an assist. The goalie win went to Emily Morphitis, who played the first half with three saves.
On Friday, UAlbany will head to Buffalo to take on Canisius for a 7 p.m. game.
