UAlbany Heads South to Face Two Top-4 America East Teams

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Great Danes will look to rebound from Saturday’s defeat with a pair of road matches against a couple of the league’s top teams. UAlbany will play Stony Brook on Friday, November 1st at 7:30 p.m., followed by UMBC on Sunday, November 3rd at 2 p.m.

UAlbany enters the weekend tied for third place in the conference with a 5-3 league and 5-16 overall record. Stony Brook is tied for first at 6-2 in-conference and 12-13 overall, while UMBC is tied with UAlbany at 5-3 in the America East and 14-9 in 2013.

UAlbany defeated Stony Brook in four sets on October 13th and is 12-1 vs. the Seawolves under MJ Engstrom. UMBC pulled out a five-set victory on October 11th as UAlbany is now 12-2 against the Retrievers in the Engstrom era.

Since playing UAlbany, Stony Brook has won three of its last four to get into first place in the league. Senior outside hitter Kaitlin Costello leads the league with 310 kills, adding 227 digs and 25 aces. The conference leader in aces with 43 is junior setter Hannah Dolan, who adds 827 assists, 45 blocks and 150 digs.

Friday’s five-set loss to Stony Brook ended a two-match winning streak for UMBC. Four players have between 200-240 kills, led by senior outside hitter Ali Goc’s 238 kills with 18 aces and 324 digs. Junior outside Hannah Schmidt has a team-best 25 aces with 220 kills and 74 blocks, while sophomore middle Krystal Mlemchukwu leads UMBC with 85 blocks, adding 203 kills.
