AMERICA EAST RELEASE  I  FINAL STANDINGS

BRETTON WOODS, N.H. — After winning eight of the America East’s 19 championships during the 2013-14 season, the University at Albany has claimed the conference’s Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup for the second consecutive year and third time in school history. The league announced the final cup standings Tuesday evening at its yearly awards dinner on Mount Washington in Bretton Woods, N.H.

The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East as determined by a scoring system that rewards a school for success both during the regular season and in championship competition.

“In earning our second consecutive Commissioner’s Cup, our student athletes, coaches and staff continued to sustain the culture of excellence that is defined by commitment, determination and integrity,” said UAlbany’s Vice President of Athletic Administration and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Lee McElroy.

“Our achievement is in concert with the mission and values of the university,” added McElroy. “We look forward to celebrating this significant milestone with our fans, donors, alums and university representatives.”

The only active member of the conference to ever win the cup, UAlbany matched last year’s output and tied an America East record by winning eight league titles. The Great Danes also captured three regular-season crowns and a pair of runner-up finishes to help net a league-best 369 points.

Stony Brook came in second-place for the second straight year, earning a school-record 338 points, followed by UMBC (298 points) in third, the University of New Hampshire (283) in fourth, Binghamton University (242) in fifth and the University of Hartford (202) in sixth. The University of Vermont (190), University of Maine (170) and UMass Lowell (129) rounded out the standings.

The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution, which receives two points.

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, tennis, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team that receives two points.
