UAlbany Takes on In-State Foes Iona and Hofstra

ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s soccer team will play a Friday road game against Iona at 3 p.m. followed by its first home contest on Sunday against Hofstra at 3 p.m.

The home game against Hofstra will be played at the Plumeri Sports Complex at the College of St. Rose in Albany.  Fans may attend the game free of charge.

UAlbany (1-2-0) is coming off of a 4-0 defeat at Syracuse.  Alexa Schneider and Allison Carhart each had shots on goal in the second half, while Syracuse’s Erin Simon got a hat trick.

In the last meeting, Aubrey VanGorder scored a goal in the 12th minute for the eventual game-winner as UAlbany defeated Iona 1-0 in 2011.  The Great Danes faced Hofstra last season in Hampstead, falling on an Amber Stobbs golden goal in the 117th minute in a 2-1 double overtime game.

Iona stands at 0-3-1 on the year and will play its third straight home game, going 0-1-1 in those games, both in overtime.  Senior forward Nicole Paulucci has the team’s only goal this season, while senior midfielder leads Iona with five shots.  Senior Trista Rivera has a .778 save percentage in goal and a 1.41 GAA.

Hofstra, the reigning Colonial Athletic Assocation champion, is 1-3 this season, coming off a 6-5 overtime defeat to Boston College.  The team’s leading scorer is sophomore midfielder/forward Leah Galton, who has a trio of goals and assists.  Junior Sam Scolarici leads the Pride with four goals.  Two players have split time in goal: senior Emily Morphitis (2.50 GAA) and freshman Friederike Mehring (3.41 GAA).
