UAlbany Victim of Ryan Hat Trick, Falls 3-0 in Bob Ford Field Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Great Danes women’s soccer team played its first game of the year at Bob Ford Field in front of a vibrant crowd, but fell to Columbia 3-0 on Friday night.

In the third minute, Chelsea Ryan got fouled inside the 18-yard box during a corner kick to draw a penalty kick.  She kicked the ball to the left side of the net to give Columbia (3-2) a 1-0 lead.

UAlbany (1-7) protected against a couple of shots and got its own opportunity in the seventh minute, but Alexa Schneider’s shot was saved by Columbia keeper Grace Redmon.

After 14 minutes had elapsed, the Great Danes got looks on offense.  A couple of looping shots intended for the high part of the cage from Schneider and Leanne Miller were saved by a jumping Redmon.

Aubrey VanGorder continued the attack, getting a look from outside the box in the 26th minute, but another Redmon save kept UAlbany off the board.

Columbia got a corner kick opportunity in the 34th minute.  Torie Goode put the ball into the box.  After a kick by Beverly Leon and header by Natalie, Ryan headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 Lions lead.

Schneider tried again in the 37th minute with a shot, but again Redmon was in place to make the save.  The Great Danes went into halftime down two goals.

UAlbany played aggressively in the early part of the second half.  VanGorder put a corner kick into the box in minute 50, which was headed by Kari Quinn into the arms of Redmon.

The following minute, Columbia got its own corner kick.  Maya Marder kicked the ball into the goal box.  Ryan headed the ball into the near side part of the net for her third goal, making it 3-0 Columbia.

The home team tried to get back in the latter part of the second half, with shots from Anna Hogan and Caitlyn Paltsios missing the cage.

Jackie Ubert entered the game in goal for UAlbany in the 72nd minute, finishing the game.  She did not allow a goal and made two saves.

The Great Danes got just one shot off in the last 18 minutes, a high attempt by Schneider, and fell to Columbia 3-0.

Schneider led UAlbany with four shots, putting three of them on goal.  Quinn had three shots, with one saved by the keeper.

Ryan earned her first three goals of the year for Columbia.  Leon, Marder and Melo all got an assist.

The Great Danes will play their final non-conference regular season game on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the road against Rhode Island.
