Women’s Track Selects Captains
ALBANY, N.Y. – Cross country has finally come to an end, and the University at Albany runners now shift their focus to the upcoming indoor track season. Part of that transition includes the selection of team captains for the new season. The women’s track team announced their selections on Tuesday, less than a week before the RACC Classic Intra-Squad meet on December 9. The women’s captains are seniors Katie Dowd, Kathryn Fanning, Jillian Haynes, and Tynelle Taylor-Chase.
“They are a great group of leaders who I have no doubt will lead our program well,” said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Roberto Vives, speaking of both the women’s and men’s selections, which were also made on Tuesday.
Dowd is a Staten Island, N.Y. native who primarily throws the javelin. She is fourth all-time in the event in school history, with a throw of 128’-10”.
Fanning is coming off of a successful cross country season where she was a mainstay as the team’s third runner. She holds school records in the indoor 1,000 (2:46.70) and mile (4:43.23), and the outdoor 1,500 (4:22.83), as well as holding the 10th fastest time in the indoor 800 (2:16.08) and the fourth fastest time in the outdoor 800 (2:10.62).
Haynes is a Brooklyn, N.Y native who focuses on the shorter sprint events. She is third all-time in the 60 (7.62), and fifth all-time in the indoor 200 (24.87). Outdoors, Haynes is fourth all-time in the 100 (11.93) and fifth all time in the 200 (24.30).
Taylor-Chase is a Whitby, Ontario native hurdler. She excels at the longer hurdle events but also dabbles in the shorter events as well as open sprints. She is seventh all-time in the indoor 500 (1:15.05) and ninth all-time in the 60 hurdles (8.92). Outdoors, Taylor-Chase holds the ninth spot in the 100 hurdles (14.34), and the second spot in the 400 hurdles (59.32).
Coach Vives shared some of his thoughts about the athletes who were selected.
“Katie is one of the hardest workers on our team. Kathryn is a tremendous student and athlete who leads by example. Jillian is highly dedicated and committed to success. And Tynelle has an unbelievable commitment to success.”
The men’s team selected Jonathan Santana, Matthew Catera, Abel Gilet, and Alexander Bowen as their captains. After the RACC Classic Intra-Squad meet on December 9, UAlbany’s first competition will be the Penn State Relays in State College, Pa., on January 11.
